New Members: When you join

The following information should be useful to you during your first few months with the choir. In the event of any omissions, please just ask!

Rehearsals

When: Wednesday 7 30pm- 9 30pm

Where: Inverness Gaelic School, Slackbuie - how to find us

What: Choir usually practices as a whole group led by the Conductor. Sections or individuals regularly ‘breakout’ to go over particular music parts with the deputy conductor and Gaelic pronunciation with the Gaelic Tutor. Again, if you are unsure of anything please just ask.

What to bring:  pencil, diary, folders are also useful for storing your music (Music provided by the choir)

Seating: We sit in sections (soprano, alto, bass, tenor) if in doubt ask the conductor where to sit. If, when you first join you’re unsure of which part your voice is suited to please let us know and this can be easily sorted! Music and CDs of each part can be provided by the choir to help you practice at home.

Performances

The choir usually performs from memory without music. Our dress code for performances is as follows;

Female: Black blouse, black tights, plain black shoes, choir Skirt (provided and owned by choir) or black trousers/ skirt.

Male: White shirt, Red tie, Kilt, Kilt socks and black shoes. Unless instructed otherwise.

Accommodation

When the choir performs away from home there is often a need to stay over night. In these circumstances, accommodation is booked through the choir and is often partly subsidised.

Transport

Transport to performances is often provided and again this is subsidised by the choir.

Membership Fee and Fund Raising

The membership fee is currently set at £50 per annum. We try to keep this to a minimum by holding fund raising events throughout the year such as Ceilidhs, raffles and performances.

There is a ‘50’s Club’ which generates funds for the choir also. You buy a number for £1 per month, (it is appreciated if this is paid for the whole year – total of £12, as soon as possible after the AGM.) there are 2 prizes of £10 each month.

All choir members are encouraged to contribute to raising funds.

Mod

The Royal National Mod is Scotland’s premier Gaelic festival and is held annually in October at different locations throughout Scotland.

Our Choir participates in the competitions held on the last Friday of the Mod Week.

If distances are involved, this usually means that the choir travels to the Mod on Thursday and returns on Saturday.

During the festival there are several ceilidhs and concerts that, time allowing, we participate in.

Management of the choir

The choir is managed by the choir committee. Members of the committee are elected at the annual AGM held in November.

Committee meetings are held regularly throughout the year where issues can be raised and discussed. Each section of the choir has a representative.

Decisions are made in a democratic way and if you have any contributions or points to raise you can speak to your section rep.

Information is disseminated at choir rehearsals and also via email where possible.

We also have information on the choir blog.
